De Eerlijke Bankwijzer report is the twentieth update of the periodic survey of the credit and investment policies of eight Dutch banks. The aim is to provide insight into how Dutch banks score on six sustainability themes and one risk sector and to encourage them to adopt policies for socially responsible business and investment.
Clarified and improved credit and investment policies
Triodos Bank achieved higher scores on the themes of taxation, biodiversity, animal welfare and gender equality. This is the result of clarified and improved credit and investment policies. For example, we now explicitly state what we expect from animal-friendly agriculture in terms of animal transport and the natural behaviour of animals. We also set higher requirements for large companies' policies on equality, diversity and inclusion, as well as their complaints procedures.

Incentive for positive change
According to Daniël Köhler, Managing Director of Triodos Bank Netherlands, the good scores are recognition of the bank's mission. Triodos exclusively finances initiatives that contribute to positive cultural, ecological and social change, using money from customers who consciously choose to do so. "De Eerlijke Bankwijzer plays an important role in keeping sustainability in the spotlight and encouraging banks to not only make promises, but also to take real action. We are, of course, proud of our scores. They reflect our commitment to fulfilling our promise to our customers every day: to use their money in a sustainable and transparent way to contribute to positive change."
"We are delighted with this recognition and see it as an encouragement. For 45 years, we have been committed to reforming the financial system from within. Today's financial system focuses primarily on quick profits and still takes too little account of planetary boundaries and the long-term well-being of people. If we restructure the system, we can ensure that sustainability is not just something for frontrunners, but becomes the norm. Our goal is for the financial sector as a whole to contribute to a fair and sustainable future for everyone."
About De Eerlijke Bankwijzer
De Eerlijke Bankwijzer is an independent partnership of five social organisations: Amnesty International, Milieudefensie, Oxfam Novib, PAX, and World Animal Protection. There are no financial or personnel links between Triodos Bank and the Fair Bank Guide. The research was conducted by an independent research agency, Profundo. The research examined which sustainability criteria are included in the sustainability policy with regard to the internal operations and the credit and investment policy of eight banking groups. The assessment methodology was developed by Fair Finance International (FFI), in which De Eerlijke Bankwijzer collaborates with an international network of civil society organisations, based on international standards such as treaties, guidelines, quality marks and codes of conduct. The methodology covers policy for various investment categories, namely commercial lending (including underwriting), project financing, balance sheet investments and asset management for clients.
