Our ambition: net zero by 2035

Triodos Bank has set the ambitious target to reach net zero by 2035 at the latest. Our target not only covers emissions from our own operations (Scope 1 & 2), but also emissions from our entire portfolio of loans to customers and from the complete range of funds managed by Triodos Investment Management (Scope 3).We aim to reach this target by reducing our own emissions and the emissions of the activities we finance. We also invest in Nature-based Solutions that remove carbon from the atmosphere.

But it’s not enough if only Triodos reaches net zero. The entire world needs to change. Therefore, we also use our voice and leverage our influence to push for broader change. For example, we are vocal about the shortcomings of climate policies and summits, push the financial sector to be more ambitious and advocate for a global fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty.

1 Investing in renewable energy

We continue to play a leading role in financing the energy transition

Triodos Bank has played an active role in the energy transition for a long time; from financing the first wind turbine in the Netherlands in 1986, to being ranked first globally for the financing of renewable energy projects by total number of deals. We finance traditional renewables such as onshore wind, solar and hydro, alongside electric vehicle charging, battery storage and energy efficiency projects. Triodos Bank takes a proactive stance in seeking out energy solutions in technologies, creating new jobs on the way and paving the path to a fully sustainable renewable energy sector. A transition to a sustainable energy system is critical to reach a Net Zero society, and will therefore remain a key priority for Triodos.

2 Real emission reduction of our portfolio

We aim for a significant reduction in emissions of our business lending and mortgage portfolio

Our focus on impact determines which sectors we finance and how we finance them. We value and support the work of companies, organisations and people who seek, through their activity, to benefit people and the planet. We have built a track record of financing organisations that work in the nature and environment sectors, social business, culture and welfare. Our lending customers have an important role to play in achieving our net-zero ambition. Ultimately, we will have to succeed together in reducing GHG emissions. We will continue to engage with our customers, helping them to realise a reduction in emissions.

We also want to reduce property-based emissions and transform existing housing to zero-emission or zero-emission ready. We introduced our first green mortgages in 2012, providing a full energy audit and a sliding scale of interest rate discount based upon the energy label of the house. The more energy efficient the home, the lower the interest rate. Today, we still relate the interest rates to the energy performance and offer a unique biobased mortgage to stimulate biobased building methods.

3 Investing in nature

We grow our portfolio of investments in Nature-based Solutions

We increase our investments in Nature-based Solutions: sustainable forestry, rewilding and nature conservation projects and regenerative organic agriculture – removing carbon from the atmosphere and supporting biodiversity and local communities.

By catalysing, developing and selecting projects with multiple positive impacts (climate, resilience, biodiversity, community livelihoods, health & wellbeing) we can help address multiple challenges while also making progress on our net zero goals. By integrating regenerative practices we will help farming clients to reduce and sequester emissions on agricultural land.

In the UK we have already helped catalyse the creation and investment of new business models to support the restoration and conservation of nature. Whether it is peatland, wetlands, grasslands, or forests, there is huge potential to recognise the multiple impacts that each project can deliver whilst sequestering atmospheric emissions.

We are working on setting up a dedicated blended finance fund to finance sustainable forestry, nature conservation & restoration and smallholder agroforestry in Africa and Latin America.
