What is the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty initiative?

The campaign is a global effort to foster international cooperation to accelerate a transition to clean energy for everyone, end the expansion of oil, gas and coal, and wind down existing production in keeping with what science shows is needed to address the climate crisis.

Triodos Bank and a coalition of partners have called on governments to commit to this treaty at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai.

Why we need to take action

Ending new exploration and expansion and phasing-out fossil fuel production is critical over the next decade to keep the world in line with global climate goals and to avoid catastrophic climate disruption.

Although many countries have adopted net-zero goals, new fossil fuel projects continue to be approved by governments – and funded by banks. A Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty would halt new fossil fuel development and manage the equitable phase out of coal, oil and gas.

It's gaining momentum

In supporting the fossil fuel treaty, Triodos Bank is joining 8 nation-states, over 3,000 scientists and academics, 101 Nobel laureates, hundreds of health professionals, thousands of religious institutions including a growing number of Indigenous organisations and youth activists, almost 100 cities and subnational governments, more than 600 Parliamentarians across the world, and a growing number of businesses in calling for a treaty to phase out fossil fuels and fast track a fair energy transition.

We believe that the finance sector has a key role to play in meeting global climate targets. Since the Paris Agreement was signed in 2016, banks around the world have pumped $5.5 trillion into fossil fuels. We believe that needs to stop.

At Triodos Bank, we have always been an advocate for an economy free from fossil fuels. Since our foundation in 1980, we’ve financed renewable energy and excluded fossil fuels from our loans and investments.

Triodos Bank has set an ambitious target of being net-zero by 2035 with all its loans and investments, and in its own operations. It aims to reach this target by reducing its own emissions and the absolute emissions of the activities it finances. Triodos Bank also invests directly in nature-based solutions that remove carbon from the atmosphere.
