The Spitsbergen Ambition was presented to Ed Nijpels, chairman of the Dutch Climate Council. The underwriters want the Ambition to be included in the Climate Agreement and invite other financial institutions to follow.

The Spitsbergen Ambition is an initiative of a number of institutions that participated in an expedition to Spitsbergen, which was organised in April 2018 by polar explorer and journalist Bernice Notenboom. Triodos Bank hopes that the Spitsbergen Ambition will be a starting point for a broader debate about the role of the financial sector in the energy transition. The Spitsbergen Ambition has been signed by ABN AMRO, AXA IM Netherlands, ACTIAM, AEGON, ASN Bank, ASR, Triodos Bank, BNG Bank, Double Dividend, FMO, ING, NNEK, Rabobank, SET Ventures and De Volksbank.
