The influence score is a new ranking by Clean Energy Pipeline, a leading independent source of news, data and analytics for the renewable energy industry, and combines the total value of clean energy project finance with the number of transactions. Deal value and count cover the main renewable energy generation and storage technologies, including solar PV, onshore wind, offshore wind, and battery energy storage systems.

Next phase of the energy transition

Earlier this year, Triodos Bank launched a renewed energy vision, recognising that, apart from replacing fossil fuels with renewables, the next phase of the energy transition must also address rising energy demand, use of scarce materials, grid resilience and social fairness. Therefore, the bank prioritises financing of energy storage, local electricity grids, energy efficiency and circular supply chains.

A good example of Triodos Bank’s recent clean energy deals is the financing of LEAP24, a rapidly growing provider of fast-charging stations for commercial electric vehicles, operating in both the UK and the Netherlands. In Spain, Triodos Bank and the Catalan Finance Institute provided €22 million in financing to Estabanell for a portfolio of solar photovoltaic projects with a total capacity of 62.8 MWp. And in Belgium, Triodos Bank is one of the financiers of two large battery parks announced in June through its client Storm, adding a total of 300 MW of controllable battery capacity.

Small and mid-sized clean energy projects

Besides large deals, the bank is also strongly positioned in small and mid-sized clean energy projects that are often community-based and may be overlooked by other banks. This expertise is also reflected in the activities of Triodos Investment Management, a globally active impact investor and wholly owned subsidiary of Triodos Bank NV. In Europe, Triodos Investment Management has a strong renewable energy infrastructure debt capability. This includes managing an energy infrastructure debt mandate for a large Dutch pension fund, focused on renewable energy assets, as well as financing innovative solutions through its energy and climate funds, for instance in Battery Energy Storage Systems, like Bluefield Storage Development. Its clean energy activities also extend to emerging markets, where the Hivos-Triodos Fonds provided a loan in June to Sun King, the world’s largest off-grid energy company, operating across Africa.
