Sustainable trade (Social)
Latco International was founded in Bolivia in 2003 and grows, processes and exports certified organic sesame seed. By now, Latco International has grown into the largest export company of organic sesame in Bolivia. Buyers can be found in Japan, the United States and Europe. Latco International sources the sesame seed from around 900 small-scale around the city of Santa Cruz.
The company offers them fair payment conditions and training programs. Triodos Sustainable Trade Fund has provided Latco International with a trade finance which enables the company to pay the farmers directly upon delivery of the sesame.
KEY INDICATORS as of 31 December 2014:
- Number of hectares:3,800 hectares of sustainably cultivated land, equivalent to 5,322 football pitches
- Number of farmers: 1,170
Smallholder farmers in developing countries do not necessarily reap the rewards of a complex international trade system. So, by financing fair trade enterprises we aim to make sure that individuals and their families are paid fairly for their products.
