We have a long-standing track-record of analyzing sustainability issues (from climate change to human rights) and determining our own viewpoint on that. These positions are relevant for finance activities (it determines where we see positive impact but also makes clear what Triodos Bank excludes) as well as for our advocacy and thought leadership positions. This work is centered around five interlinked transition themes: food, resources, energy, societal and wellbeing. Currently, we’re looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Sustainability Researcher to join our Impact & Economics team.
Profile
How you will make a difference
You will help us to ‘change finance to finance change’, by conducting research that concentrates on analysis, vision and thought leadership relevant for the commercial and societal proposition of Triodos Bank, including Triodos Investment Management and Triodos Regenerative Money Centre. As a Sustainability Researcher you will have the opportunity to be active in the core of one of the most sustainable and values-based banks.
As a part of your daily routine:
- You will conduct research on different sustainability topics linked to the Societal and Wellbeing transition themes and the social exclusionary criteria for our Minimum Standards. Research areas may include housing, healthcare, elderly care, arts & culture, education, common ownership and social enterprises.
- You will write publications varying from vision papers, position statements, thematic articles, opinion articles and other types of publications for external or internal use that connect to the topics in our financing activities and thought leadership work.
- You will publish and present research and represent Triodos Bank externally at events, conferences and e.g. in relevant branch associations.
- You will collaborate closely with colleagues in the Impact & Economics team in building visions and impact strategies, as well as working closely together with colleagues across the organization focused on the social domain.

- have a positive and open attitude in combination with analytical skills and the drive to make the world a little more sustainable
- have an ability to independently work on longer term research projects, while also being able to meet more reactive adhoc deadlines
- have excellent communication skills and be able to summarize complex material both verbally and in writing
- be a self-starter, who can work independently, is result-oriented and able to plan, manage and execute projects
- get energy from doing research, writing and discussing about it
Furthermore, it is expected that you will have:
- relevant working experience, preferably in sustainability research
- a strong affinity for and relevant expertise in topics within the social domain
- an academic Master’s degree or PhD in social or economic sciences with a focus on sustainability research, or equivalent
- proficient writing skills or a willingness to develop them, for both strategic documents and more persuasive or editorial-style writing
- strong stakeholder management skills, both with internal colleagues and external partners
- an excellent command of English and working proficiency in Dutch, whereas proficiency in other languages can be an advantage
Your future colleagues
You will work in the Impact & Economics team that consist of 13 colleagues and will be reporting to the Team Lead Research. Within the team the primary working language is English. You will work closely together with the researchers and impact and advocacy managers in the team, as well as colleagues in the different European countries where Triodos Bank operates.
