Capitol Trading Company
Sustainable trade (Social)
Capitol Trading Company is a family-run cocoa trading business in Sierra Leone. Following the civil that ended in 2002, the company played a major role in reviving the cocoa sector and is now listed as one of the top 3 cocoa exporters in the country. At the moment, Capitol Trading exports UTZ-certified cocoa, exclusively to the Netherlands. The company sources its cocoa from almost 9,000 small-scale farmers, and all of them are “organic by default”, as they don’t use any synthetic input. Capitol Trading provides technical assistance and training to the farmers on more efficient and sustainable agricultural practices, and also provides them with harvesting equipment.

Smallholder farmers in developing countries do not necessarily reap the rewards of a complex international trade system. So, by financing fair trade enterprises we aim to make sure that individuals and their families are paid fairly for their products.
