Sustainable trade (Social)
ICAM Uganda was founded in 2010 and is a subsidiary of ICAM in Italy, one of the leading buyers in organic and fair trade cocoa throughout the world. Over 5,000 smallholder farmers in Uganda harvest the cocoa beans and sell them to ICAM Uganda to process, pack, and export to ICAM. In order to ensure the upmost quality and transparency in its value chain, ICAM is the only buyer of the cocoa.
As part of ICAM’s sustainability policy, all cocoa is ethically sourced and the company pays farmers immediately and fairly thanks to the trade finance provided by the Triodos Sustainable Trade Fund. As cocoa production is subject to less seasonality than other commodities, it offers a stable income for farmers.
KEY INDICATOR as of 31 December 2015:
- number of farmers: 5,000
Smallholder farmers in developing countries do not necessarily reap the rewards of a complex international trade system. So, by financing fair trade enterprises we aim to make sure that individuals and their families are paid fairly for their products.
