EDPYME Alternativa (Alternativa) is a regulated non deposit-taking microfinance institution with a focus on serving micro and small entrepreneurs in the north of Peru. Alternativa has a clear strategy to expand operations in the rural areas and poorest regions of northern Peru where access to finance is limited. It offers a range of credit services - including an agricultural product ‘crédito agricola’ and a specific livestock product ‘crédito pecuario’ - payment services, and insurance products.
Alternativa has started to diversify its product assortment further with micro insurance. Given Alternativa’s rural approach, its agri-portfolio and being a niche player in the Peruvian microfinance sector, Hivos-Triodos Fund and Triodos Sustainable Finance Foundation has provided a loan to Alternativa to realise its growth ambitions.

Microfinance banks play a crucial role providing access to finance to an increasing number of people living on low-incomes.
