Sustainable trade (Social)
Export Sustent is an Ecuadorian palm oil trading company, established in 2008, and wholly owned by Natural Habitats Ecuador (NHE). The latter is part of the Natural Habitats Group (NHG) - a group of companies established with the vision to produce palm oil in an environmentally and socially responsible way. NHG is a fully integrated supply chain, 'from farmer to fork', in which NHE plays the key role as the sourcing and initial processing part of this supply chain.
NHE is made up of a group of companies, each set up for a specific part in the value chain, from a small plantation (also serving as demonstration farm for organic palm oil) to trading (semi-processed) palm oil products.
NHE is globally the only supplier with an organic, Fair for Life and RSPO (Round Table for Sustainable Oil) certification. No deforestation or habitat destruction results from the growing or harvesting process. This stands out especially in the palm oil sector, which is struggling with its negative ecological impact. NHE mainly sources from small holder farmers and also contributes to social development in the community through education and nutrition programs.
Trade finance from Triodos Sustainable Trade Fund enables Export Sustent to pay the farmers upon delivery of their harvest.

Smallholder farmers in developing countries do not necessarily reap the rewards of a complex international trade system. So, by financing fair trade enterprises we aim to make sure that individuals and their families are paid fairly for their products.
