Sustainable trade (Social)
Export and local sales of green coffee and, increasingly, cocoa beans is the main activity of Cooperativa Oro Verde. Oro Verde is committed to organic production. Its environmental plan focuses on reforestation, producing organic compost, reducing waste water at farm level and increase shade grown plantations by 10% per year. In addition, the cooperative provides financial services, for example by providing advance payments and loans, but also health insurance. Finally, Oro Verde pays for basic emergency insurance for its members and its employees.
Oro Verde strongly believes in sustainable farming practices and provides training and organic fertilizer to the 1,200 members. Furthermore, the cooperative plays an important role in sustaining the living standard of its members.
Trade finance from Triodos Sustainable Trade Fund enables Oro Verde to pay the farmers upon delivery of their harvest.

Smallholder farmers in developing countries do not necessarily reap the rewards of a complex international trade system. So, by financing fair trade enterprises we aim to make sure that individuals and their families are paid fairly for their products.
