Akiba Commercial Bank
Microfinance (Social business)
Akiba Commercial Bank started its activities in 1997 at the initiative of 300 Tanzanian business people who saw a high demand for microfinance in their country. At year-end 2009 the bank has 16,000 loan clients and 124,000 savings clients. The bank’s plans for 2010 include relocating its head office, expanding its network of branches and introducing a new management information system. Hivos-Triodos Fund and Triodos-Doen are among the shareholders of Akiba Commercial Bank; a senior Triodos Bank officer represents the funds on the Board of Directors.
Microfinance
Whoever you are, and wherever you live in the world, you are likely to want permanent access to financial services. Microfinance banks play a crucial role providing access to finance to an increasing number of people living on low-incomes. We finance microfinance institutions because they help to build inclusive financial sectors, where the majority of people have access to financial services, leading to a sustainable basis for balanced social and economic development.
