Nicaragua - FAMA

Fundación para el Apoyo a la Micro Empresa (FAMA) is one of the most successful microfinance institutions in Nicaragua. The organisation is predominantly active in urban areas where FAMA concentrates on micro entrepreneurs at the lower end of the market. The majority of the customers are women. FAMA is capable of growing along with its customers by offering larger and more specialised loans. FAMA shows a strong growth and intends to restructure from a development organisation to a regulated financial institution, so that future growth can be financed with savings. In 2005 Triodos Fair Share Fund has, in syndication with both Triodos-Doen and Hivos-Triodos Fund, provided several loans to FAMA in order to ensure a continuous growth during FAMA's transformation process.
