Kenya - Sacco Bandari
Bandari is the Savings and Credits Cooperative (Sacco) for employees of the Kenya Port and Ferry Services based in Mombasa. Bandari runs very straightforward operations: salary based lending to port employees. With changing market conditions and legislation Bandari is embarking on an expansion plan that will include opening of front office services (cash counters, salary payments, savings, ATM machines). In addition the Sacco has opened up its membership to partners of employees, a significant number of whom are self-employed. Bandari is in the process of developing micro-enterprise loan for these new clients. With expected new microfinance legislation Bandari may decide to further extend operations to independent companies and micro enterprises that are related to the port activities. The loan provided by Triodos-Doen, in syndicate with Hivos-Triodos Fund, supports Bandari in its ambitious strategic plan and contributes actively to increased developmental impact.
